In this week's challenge , Laura's asks us to  use the tangle "Tipple" which are basically circles of varying sizes  with each circle "kissing"  two / three other circles.

I was inspired by some mathematical  images of  circular fractal  called the  "Apollonian Gasket " so I created my tile based on this concept

Here is the deconstruction for drawing an  "Apollonian Gasket "

Tangle - Apollonian Gasket
A few tit-bits about the mathematical concepts of " Kissing Circles" & "Apollonian Gasket"
  • My interest in exploring links between mathematics and art lead me to the "Kissing Circles theorem" first formulated by René Descartes ( a 17th century philosopher and mathematician ) , who described an elegant relationship, now known as the Descartes Circle Theorem, between the radii of four mutually tangent circles, This theorem has been discovered independently several times. For instance, it was known in eighteenth century Japan . Frederick Soddy, a chemist who won the Nobel Prize in 1921 for his discovery of isotopes, also found a proof of it and was so pleased with the theorem that he published it in the form of a poem entitled The Kiss Precise. The poem begins with these lines:
"For pairs of lips to kiss maybe
 Involves no trigonometry.
'Tis not so when four circles kiss
Each one the other three."
  • What is an Apollonian Gasket ? Mathematically it is a fractal generated from triples of tangential circles   and named after the Greek mathematician Apollonius of Perga . Three touching circles form a curvelinear triangle. A unique circle exists that can be inscribed into that triangle and is called the inner Soddy circle. If this circle is removed from the triangle, what remains is the union of three smaller curvelinear triangles. Each of those has it's own  Soddy circle, whose removal leaves the union of three even smaller triangles, and so on. This process can continue indefinitely.
Here are a few images I have taken from the internet of different " circle fractal" to show that mathematics is beautiful and aesthetically appealing.

Below is a  sand drawing of an "Apollonian Gasket " in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada , by Jim Denevan. It  is the world's largest single artwork with a circumference of more than nine miles , visible from 40,000 feet up in the sky. .

As I was cleaning up my art material , I came across a pencil sketch I had done several years ago in Kochi, , a beautiful city in South India .

It was a portrait of   Shri .Dattatreya Ramachandra Bendre (Kannada:ದತ್ತಾತ್ರೇಯ ರಾಮಚಂದ್ರ ಬೇಂದ್ರೆ) who was one of  the most famous of Kannada poets. He is a recipient  of the  Jnanpith Award for Kannada , the highest literary honour conferred in India. He was conferred Padmashri by the Government of India.

So , here is the sketch I created of this famous poet!

Organic Gardening - Growing onion greens on a window sill

Starting to sprout the onion in a plastic bottle lid filled with a little water. You can use lids which is about 1" deep.   Once the root mass and leaves have increased , you can either plant it into the soil ( if you want onions ) or a slightly deeper container with water  ( if you only want green onions) .

You'll need to use very little water and change it once in 3-4 days... otherwise there is a tendency for water to turn yellow-brown and start decaying / smelling. The toothpick are only to support the onion and allow just the roots to touch the water (if you want to grow the onions only in water for the green leaves or as a pretty display indoors )

Makes a pretty display on the window sill . The toothpicks acts as support and prevents the whole onion from sinking into the water and rotting !

The onion greens  can be used as a garnish, or mixed with eggs to make omelettes or used for making Chinese fried rice. :). They are milder in taste compared to the bulb, and look attractive when used as a garnish.

This week's challenge asks us to pick "One Little Word" that you want to be your focus for the year.

As I searched around in my head / on the internet / in my library , I realised that my mind was full of ideas....and I was pretty pleased with the many words I came up with .... but , I asked myself "Is it better to have my mind full , or it is better to be mindful"?

The word " Mindfulness"  floated into my mind and all other words simply faded away......and I realized that  tangling is one of the easiest way to experience mindfulness.

I also realize that I need to be mindful about my health , my irritability and impatience with  people. I also need to be mindful , when I worry about the future and remind myself that ....worrying does not take away tomorrow's troubles...but it takes away today's peace.

I have always loved Japanese calligraphy and I have incorporated it in my tile.  In the calligraphy character for mindfulness, the top portion , I understand  represents Presence, and the bottom portion representsHeart; thus  mindfulness means"The presence of Heart."

So here is my response to this week's challenge

Based on the tiling of  a pavement in my city , I created a tangle"Pavement" using triangular / hexagonal grid shown below.

I used this in my tile for this week's challenge , and  just before posting , I saw that Shelly Beauch had used a similar pattern in her tile. A little more investigation at tanglepatterns.com/ told me that Shoshi had created this tangle earlier ( Ref:  http://shoshiplatypus.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/zentanglesmy-first-pattern-y-ful-power.html ). My deconstruction is slightly different from what Shoshi has done.

Now coming back to Mindfulness ... what exactly is it?

This lovely quote says it all...

"Mindfulness is simply being aware of what is happening right now without wishing it were
  different...........
Enjoying the pleasant  without holding on when it changes ( which it will)
Being with the unpleasant without fearing it will always be this way ( which it won't) "
                                                                                                                     by James Baraz

Here is a  nice poster which I downloaded from the internet and can be used to remind oneself to be mindful( but it aint easy as the poster says :-(

Another simple write-up  , which explains the concept and the way to practice it in very clear terms

.... and one more write-up which I had compiled several years ago , printed it out on paper , pleated it into a "concertina book" to keep in my handbag to act as a reminder. It can be used as a bookmark too and you can use it if you so wish

I came across a cool software tool called "Scribbler Too" at Sandra Strait (Molossus) blog  http://lifeimitatesdoodles.blogspot.in/2014/02/told-ya-scribbler-toos-too-addictive.html . This is one of the blogs I visit frequently and I love the striking images she creates using doodles/ tangles. I specially love her "steampunk" series

She has used this tool to create a yak , clown , a cat ...etc and warns you that it is addictive . Nevertheless  I tried my hand at it. Here is my first"scribble art" . I realised that it is fun and easy so you'll be seeing more scribble art of mine in the future. Stay tuned!

2nd Feb 2014 World Wetland Day

Every year, the second of February is celebrated as the  World Wetlands Day (WWD) all over the world  to mark the signing of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, called Ramsar Convention, on February 2, 1971, in the Iranian city of  Ramsar. It is an intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. Actions aimed at raising public awareness of wetland values and benefits and the convention have been taken since 1997 by government agencies, NGOs, and groups of citizens at all levels of the community.

This year’s theme is  Wetlands and Argriculture, partners in growth  to reflect the interdependence between wetlands and agriculture and the key role that wetlands play. Making the link between wetlands ,  agriculture and water  is critical: without wetlands there will be no water , without water there will be no wetlands – and without water there will be no agriculture, no food !

Water is an essential item in our lives and we have all experienced shortage of water at some time or the other. We are also seeing many Bangalore lakes drying up and going into disuse and are being encroached  upon and used for dumping of garbage and sewage . Lakes and other water bodies are key elements in replenishing underground water in any locality.

Our locality Rajarajeshwarinagar  in Bangalore is no different ... so RRNagar - I Care , a group of concerned resident decided to celebrate the  WWD & the International Year of Family Farming on 2nd Feb 2014 !

"RRNagar - I Care" , " Eat your Street " and  "Soil & Soul" groups  gave talks  on the  importance of wetlands and why the existing lakes  need to be protected & preserved for the future generations , what we need to do to bring in a balanced bio-diversity and clean water into our lakes and how important it is for each of us to grow our foods ...in whatever space we have in our homes , a neighboring empty plot and even our street footpaths .

The event took place in the evening at Halagevaderhalli Kere of RRNagar. Here are a few pictures of the event

Horticulture Department of Karnataka conducted a  workshop to encourage the residents to start a small  kitchen garden in their homes .. ..in their backyard , terraces or balcony and to learn to take care of the kitchen waste generated in their own  homes by composting the same . Participants walked out happy with the free seedling , seeds, Manure & tool distributed by the department....to encourage the residents to start their garden immediately .

What a happy coincidence ! I am reading a very interesting book called  "White space is not your enemy"  by Kim Golombisky and Rebecca Hagen  to try and understand a bit about graphic design and composition .... and here I find this week's challenge asking you to embrace white space !

I for one am a little intimated by white space so here is my attempt at creating one without going overboard about tangling every bit of space . ( Psst... this is the central tiles of ensemble I am presently working on,  which I hope to complete by end of this month! ).

So here is my minimalistic  response!

This ZIA has been done on recycled paper using waste material in and around India's famous tea plantation in Munnar. The slightly textures and brownish paper is hand made by differently abled people using natural additives and waste material like Eucalyptus leaves , straw , coconut husk , Elephant poop ( yes...poop ) , flower petals ...etc and torn and hand-stitched into an  ~A5 size booklet .

I enjoyed doing this ZIA ... and I especially like the aged appearance of the ZIA.

20th March - World Sparrow Day

$

20th March  is celebrated the world over as "World Sparrow Day" to raise awareness of the diminishing number of the house sparrows and other common birds found in urban area. The initiative has it's origin in Nasik , India , and was started by " Nature Forever Society" . The first celebrations took place in the year 2010 by carrying out a variety of activities / events like painting competitions, talks / procession to raise awareness , and  interactions with media.

Many of the birds are facing extinction due to  increased use of pesticides in growing our foods , change in the pattern of buildings being constructed , and loss of trees / gardensin urban areas. Additionally the release of radiation from the mobile and the TV towers and  release of carbon monoxide from automobile has also been some of the  causes of a sharp decline in the number of sparrows the world over.

So what is it that one can do to reverse the declining trend of sparrows and other common birds? Starting from today you can start your journey ......
  • Keep bowls of water on the terrace and windows for birds to drink from and have a bath.Ensure that you clean and fill the bowl with freah water daily.
  • Sprinkle grains like bajra , ragi , rice...etc  in an open area like your terrace / backyard to attract sparrows / other . Don't get disappointed if they don't come immediately... birds take time to find sources of food and water. Once you start don't stop doing the good work.
  • Grow some plants / tree on your terrace / balcony or even on your footpath. These provide space for bird to nest and start a family.
  • Go on a nature trek with some bird-watchers in your locality and capture some photos of the birds / trees and other flora/ fauna and share them with your friend and family.
  • Put bird boxes and bird feeders outside your house or in your gardens
  • Research about sparrows/ other birds and write a story /poem / essay and share it in your school

I was in a quandary as to what I should draw with the tangle "Quandary" ...it reminded me of the " flower of Life " .... the "tripoli  tangle".

After much un-zen like consideration  I decided to use the Sierpinski's triangle as a sort of string ( without drawing it of-course) ... which was a mistake ( huh?) .  My triangle turned out too long ( and messy)  and my "quandary tangle " looks more like the "keenees tangle". Oh well...here is my response to this week's challenge....it's just one of those days when nothing turns out right!!!

Here is my response to this week's challenge using the tangle "rain"

In India we have a pastry in a form of a swirly cone filled with butter and icing sugar , with a blob  of jam on the top  (which was called "scones" during my childhood) A few days back I came across this pastry in the small town called Panchgini which is nestled in the beautiful Western Ghat rain forest of India...and I relived my childhood. Here is a tangle I created which looks like "scones". I added this into my zentangle at the top left hand corner.
