Every year, the second of February is celebrated as the World Wetlands Day (WWD) all over the world to mark the signing of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, called Ramsar Convention, on February 2, 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar. It is an intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. Actions aimed at raising public awareness of wetland values and benefits and the convention have been taken since 1997 by government agencies, NGOs, and groups of citizens at all levels of the community.
This year’s theme is ‘Wetlands and Argriculture, partners in growth” to reflect the interdependence between wetlands and agriculture and the key role that wetlands play. Making the link between wetlands , agriculture and water is critical: without wetlands there will be no water , without water there will be no wetlands – and without water there will be no agriculture, no food !
Water is an essential item in our lives and we have all experienced shortage of water at some time or the other. We are also seeing many Bangalore lakes drying up and going into disuse and are being encroached upon and used for dumping of garbage and sewage . Lakes and other water bodies are key elements in replenishing underground water in any locality.
Our locality Rajarajeshwarinagar in Bangalore is no different ... so RRNagar - I Care , a group of concerned resident decided to celebrate the WWD & the International Year of Family Farming on 2nd Feb 2014 !
"RRNagar - I Care" , " Eat your Street " and "Soil & Soul" groups gave talks on the importance of wetlands and why the existing lakes need to be protected & preserved for the future generations , what we need to do to bring in a balanced bio-diversity and clean water into our lakes and how important it is for each of us to grow our foods ...in whatever space we have in our homes , a neighboring empty plot and even our street footpaths .
The event took place in the evening at Halagevaderhalli Kere of RRNagar. Here are a few pictures of the event
