Cadent  and Paradox are just two of my many favorite tangles , and when these two are combined into a single tangle called  "Cadox" ( by Margaret Bremner of "http://enthusiasticartist.blogspot.in/") , my enthusiasm (???) and delight knows no bounds.Click here for the steps for  drawing Cadox

So here is my response to this weeks challenge, where I have "biggified" Cadox.

For drawing this I have used the first 7  Fibonacci numbers for drawing the "13 X 8  Golden Rectangle" as the string. ( see below for a brief explanation)Image may be NSFW.

Johannes Kepler observed that the ratio of consecutive Fibonacci numbers converges. He wrote that "as 5 is to 8 so is 8 to 13, practically, and as 8 is to 13, so is 13 to 21 almost", and concluded that the limit approaches the golden ratio.( see figure below which I have taken from the Wikipedia

Zentangle challenge #175

What a lovely tangle... and I love tangles using grids, using different ( but symmetrical) geometrical shapes. So I decided to make a cube and here is my response to this week's challenge using the tangle"Crux"by Henrike Bratz. I have taken pictures from different angles to show the various faces 




I created a template of the cube, and divided each face with a 5 X 5 "seamless grid" and created the basic Crux tangle. I added additional ornamentation / shading to create different variations of Crux on each face

A... for Aura

A- for Aura!  Hmmm... the title has a nice aura about it.... so I decided to create a zentangle around the word "AURA"  ( See the posts on ABC of Zentangle to understand a bit about zentangle).

An aura is supposed to be a subtle, luminous radiation surrounding a person or object and at times it has  been described as a map of the thoughts and feelings surrounding a person ( like a halo shown on paintings of saints and gods). However in zentangle multiple parallel lines are drawn around designs to "enhance" the overall impact of the zentangle. I have used the tangle "Auraknot" ( the 5 petaled flower / star) in my design , which is one of the prettiest tangle. A video by Rick Roberts & Maria Thomas ( creators of the zentangle method) shows the steps for drawing Auraknot .

So here is my response.....



Here are a few tit-bits of information on the concept of "aura"and its relevance in alternate healing therapies.
  • This idea of aura  is well represented in many Indian scriptures.  All persons ( and objects) are said to be made of  5 sheaths ( or kosha's in Indian parlance) .....  "Annamaya Kosha"( the human body or physical realm  ) , "Pranmaya Kosha"( the vital energy ) , "Manomaya Kosha"( Mental realm)  , "Vigyanmaya Kosha"( intellectual realm)   and  "Anandmaya Kosha"( Spritual realm) ... which is ordered from the outer and coarser to inner and subtler.According to this concept ,  disease starts at subtle inner realms ( spirit)  and moves down to the gross outer realms . 
  • The present day modern medicine of using drugs and technology( or "Allopathy") to treat disease  acts on the "Annamaya Kosha"( or the human body ) and is under the control of the other four higher layers. 
  • The so called "alternative medicine"acupuncture, reiki ( hands-on and distant healing )  , Homeopathic medicines in moderate potencies , Ayurvedaseems to act on  the"Pranmaya Kosha"( the vital energy ) which in turn effects the physical body for healing . 
  • The "ManomayaKosha" or  the mental realm ( that  receives sensory inputs, and processes them based on our perceptions and experiences )  is much more powerful than the preceeding two and plays an important role in Mind-Body healing modalities .. like aromathrapy , sound therapy ( Vedic / Gregorian chanting)  ,  colourtherapy , including Homeopathy and Ayurveda. These practices - treatment  effects the mental realm  , which in turn manifests healing  in the previous two realms
  • In the "Vigyanmaya Kosha"( intellectual realm)  , the faculty of intelligence and reasoning comes to play and modalities  like hypnotherapy , counseling ..etc are used as treatments which in turns effects the previous three realms.
  • The final one is the "Anandmaya Kosha"( Spritual realm) a state of  "ever joyfull-ness" which is uneffected by outer happenings ( including illness) . Meditation ( or Non-judgemental Witnessing ) when used therapeutically heals the mind-body and soul. Every day  activities ...like washing dishes , walking , sweeping... can be imbued with a meditative quality , when performed quietly , joyfully and with full attention. Contemplative practices ( like Yoga , Tai-chi , labyrinth walking , mindful eating , calligraphy , drawing mandalas ...etc) seems to posses a meditative quality and the picture below gives some such practices.

B .... for Bookmarks

This week's post is "B... for Bookmarks".

I love books and am a voracious reader .... I use a lot of bookmarks , not to remember where I left off, but to mark interesting parts of the book which I plan to return to, sometime in the future. So many time, my books have multiple bookmarks in them !!!

Being a "zentangler" ( Uhh...?) , I make several bookmarks using "tangles" to decorate them, and I generally use black ink on white paper which I stick onto stiff cards, using old greeting / wedding invitation cards, as a part of up-cycling these materials which otherwise go into the garbage dump. ( See the posts on ABC of Zentangle to understand a bit about zentangle)

C ...... for Celtic knots


Celtic knots are a variety graphical representations of interlacing knots used for decoration . These kinds of knot patterns first appeared in the third and fourth centuries AD and can be seen in Roman mosaic floor , Celtic art, Islamic art, Ethiopian art, and European architecture and book illumination.

I came across this during my childhood when I saw these patterns engraved on an old Bible... and ever since I  have been fascinated by them.  I felt that these were somewhat similar to the Puli Kolam (rangoli patterns in South India) and the Nagamandala ( snakes in forms of entwined knots carved on stone ) and would try my hands at drawing them.

Here is one image which I find it to be especially beautiful


 Somewhere along the way I forgot my childhood fascination of these drawing,  in the daily grind of life as an adult .... but I think it was buried somewhere deep inside me.   

This fascination surfaced some years ago( when I was in my late 50's)  when my son  gifted me with a "Celtic knot font" software which could be used to create beautiful Celtic knot design on computer using just a word processor. I spent hours playing with this software, with which I could produced beautiful very intricate patterns by just a few clicks of the keyboard. .

However I stilled loved drawing these by hand and with the advent of internet , I found several tutorials which I could use to learn and draw these patterns by hand.  Here is a "step by step drawing tutorial"  of a simple Celtic knot with and without breaks in the knot.

Zentangle Challenge # 178

This week's challenge is to choose two tangles based on your name and create a tile using these tangles. The fir though that came to my name was to use one of my favorite tangle  Mooka ( for Malathi), but when I came across Betsy Wilson's gorgeous tangle "Maryhill " , I homed on to it like a bee homes on to nectar. It's beautiful and herzendalas are even more beautiful.

For  Karpur ( letter K) the second half of my name I  used Keenees  by Donna Hornsby( a fun tangle) and  created my tile

D..... for Dark and Light principles of Design

During my school days , I remember that I was attracted towards pen and ink drawing particularly those depicting  rocky landscape, gnarled trees and ancient ships being tossed  on stormy sea. To make my drawings I would use just a dip pen , brush  & Indian ink . I would love the striking contrasts that I could create using just black ink on white paper. I would drop blobs of ink and fold the paper to get symmetrical abstract design , or blow on the ink blobs using a drinking straw to get a feathery look.

At that time I didn't realise that I was playing with the concept ..." Dark and Light principle of Design" . This concept is termed Nōtan (濃淡) in Japanese parlance , and plays a very important role in Japanese art, culture & design.... which signifies the constant interaction / dance between the "positive ( White) " and "negative ( Dark)" energy / space.
 
Artists who have based  their art-work on Nōtan design concepts claim that  the following poetry by Lao-Tsu's , poem ( written more that 2000 years ago ) describes the essence of Nōtan very clearly:

Thirty spokes meet in the hub,
but the empty space between them is the essence of the wheel.

Pots are formed from clay,
but the empty space within it is the essence of the pot.

Walls with windows and doors form the house,
but the empty space within it is the essences of the house.

The Principle:
Matter represents the usefulness
Non-matter the essence of things.

  Nōtan is most often demonstrated through pen and ink and cut paper drawings, however examples can be found in a variety of mediums including printmaking, ceramic tile design, architecture and very often in quilts

This interaction is confirmed by the ancient Chinese symbol of Yin and Yang, which  is represented by mirror images of one black and one white shape , with each containing a trace amount of the other to demonstrate their inter dependence and  revolves around a center point. The positive and negative areas make a whole through a unity of opposites that are equal and inseparable. In Nōtan, opposites complement and do not conflict.


 This is considered a "Two value Nōtan " since only two colours ....black and white are used in the design.

 So using Adobe Illustrator, I  to created two  simple designs ( see below)  based on Nōtan concepts of design. I hope I have succeeded

Zenangle Challenge # 179



 Welcome Bijou ! So you finally arrived....wonder what took you so long. So this week's challenge is to draw on a 2"X2" Bijou tile. I don't have these so I created them ....a 2"X2" cut paper tiless

So here is my response to the Bijou tile




 A few Bijou jokes :-)
 
A man goes to a Halloween party with a woman on his back.
The host asks him, "And what are you?"
The man says, “I’m a snail."
The host says, "And who's that on your back?"
And the man says, "That's Michelle!" .................. ( are you listening Shelly?...the joke is on you !)


Do you would think that, if you pulled a snail's shell off, then it would be able to move faster.
I tried it, but they seem to be more sluggish.


Why did the snail cross the road?
I don't know - but I'll let you know when it gets here!

Fun with Mathematics - Escher's mathematical art

Maurits Cornelis Escher , more popularly known as M.C.Escher, was a graphic design artist is known more for his mathematically inspired art-forms  . Escher did not have any formal  mathematical training—but his  understanding of mathematics was largely visual and intuitive .He explored "impossible objects"  , "tessellations" , "polyhedra" ... which he incorporated in his woodcuts and  lithographs 

After his visit to Alhambra in Spain  and studying Moorish motifs, which basically represented tessellations  of the plane, Escher developed a whole system to do such periodic drawings. In his case, however, the surface is not filled up with congruent abstract geometric figures, but with shapes representing birds, fish, lions , crocodiles etc.

Escher took the art of tessellation to new heights and one needs to look into his work to feel his passion for this art-form. Here is a compilation....



 Is it possible for non-artists like us ,to make these Escher-like tessellations? Yes ... and we can begin with simple one to start with ... so... how about using a square ?. A "square Tessellation" is the most common one we see all around us ... floor tiles , window grids  being the most common ones.

 Fig-1 gives  a step-by step tutorial to create an " Escher-like   tessellation.

Create a "Template" using the Steps 1 to 6 . Using the template , outline it in a piece of paper , moving it and fitting it like a jig-saw puzzle  , go on outlining it until the page is full. Color it in two contrasting colors to make the tessellation stand out

 To add more interest , take two sheets of patterned wrapping paper ( old torn ones can also be used). Using the template cut out several tiles from these papers and paste them in an alternating fashion. See Fig-2

Or maybe you have piece of your own art lying around .... make several photocopies of them , use the template and cut out several tiles ...and Voila!!!!..... you have incorporated your art into Escher-like tessellation.

I have used two zentangle which I had created sometime  in the past to create the tessellation ( see Fig-3)

To create recognizable shapes like birds and fishes you need to spend more time to understand the techniques.There are several tutorials on the net and I have provided a few links here . Hope you enjoy trying out some of these techniques.

5th Dec 2014 - World soil day

Last year ,  on December 20, 2013, the 68th UN General Assembly recognized December 5th, 2014 as World Soil Day and 2015 as the International Year of Soils. 

Keeping in view that 2014 is the International year of Family Farming , the theme for today i.e 5th Dec 2014 is the World Soil Day is " Soil , Foundation for family farming"....... a day highlighting the importance of soil and the need to use it in a sustainable way. 

Mr. Satish Kumar ,the editor-in-chief of Resurgence & Ecologist. says that  "We are all part of this healthy web of life maintained by soil. The Latin word humus means soil. The words human, humility and humus all come from the same root. When humans lose contact with soil, they are no longer humans.......We come from the soil, and we return to the soil.”

Soil is inextricably linked to human and ecosystem health and crucial if we are to ensure food, water, and energy security for nine billion people by 2050. It sustains biodiversity – and if managed wisely – contributes to the mitigation of climate change.

What can I do ?

1. Plant trees..... Trees stop soil erosion, helps build a rich soil, feeds us and other creatures on earth, gives us fresh air by absorbing air pollutants... and many other benefits.

2. Learn to "segregate waste at source" i.e in your own house and learn  how to compost your kitchen waste....by this simple act you will eliminate your unsegregated waste from going into landfills.... a major cause of  soil degradation and green house gas  generation
.
3. Green your home one plant at a time....  Grow some of the food you eat organically in your backyard , balcony or a bright window sill. You can use the compost you made from your kitchen waste to grow these plants. Adding your kitchen waste compost makes the soil rich , grows healthy food which is not only good for the planet but good for you too.

Zentangle Challenge # 197

2015 Happy New Year Greetings


The year 2015 has been declared by United Nation as the "International Year of Soil"  with the theme " Educate to preserve the soil & Conserve life on earth ".

So here's  Dilip and I ...  Wishing  you and your family ..... " A very Happy, Peaceful , Clean , Green and a Sustainable New Year " built on you "Sowing seeds of change in your life"  .... to make the year 2015 and beyond  a paradise on Earth



We have also created an A4 size "2015 planner"  around this theme and included  some thoughtful  quotations on the importance of  building  building health soil and reducing our contribution to degradation of soil by Planting trees , Composting our kitchen waste and adding it to the soil to enrich it , starting a small family and community garden to grow your own food  , sharing it equitably with  all living creatures on this planet , and our roles in adopting and spreading the message of "Sustainable living" which is not only good for us , but also good for the planet.

Zentangle Challenge #201

For this week's challenge I thought I would make the famous topological model ... "The Mobius strip" in honor of Artoo ,  who has the Moebius Syndromea congenital nerve disorder affecting cranial VI and VII nerves controlling the lateral movement of his face.

I took five tiles Dilip & I had tangled some time in the past and created  two strips each of  about 2" wide and 12" long using the Adobe Illustrator, since tangling a long strip of paper on both side would have taken very long time to complete. ( See Fig 1)

I next  stuck the two strips back to back , gave it a half twist and joint the two ends to get a "First order Mobius strip" ( See Fig 2).

 If you flatten the Mobius Strip you get the model shown in Fig 3 which looks like the famous "Reduce -Reuse - Recycle" symbol"

 However if you bisect the Mobius Strip , you get a long twisted model which when flattened closely resembles the "Moebius Syndrome Foundation Logo"( Fig-4).... Can you spot the difference?
